Questions and Answers for Teens in Crisis
Q: How long can I stay at Casa?
A: Each kid's case is assessed on a daily basis. The maximum stay is generally 2 weeks but exceptions can be made in extreme circumstances.
Q: Do my parents have to be notified?
A: We notify your parents that you are safe and that you are asking for some time and space to cool down and think things out. We have counselors who will present your case to your parents as one of asking for help and not running away.
Q: Do my parents have to give permission for me to stay at Casa?
A: In most cases, yes, and they usually do when they are informed about our program.
Q: What if I can't call my parent(s) because he/she/they have beaten, raped, or hurt me?
A: Many times we can provide shelter without parental permission if we believe you will be in danger if you go home. If you do not want us to call your parents then we can suggest that you call the Child Abuse Registry at (714) 940-1000 or go to the nearest police department to file a report. Should police feel they cannot take you into protective custody, call us back for shelter.
Q: Can my girlfriend/boyfriend come to visit me?
A: Generally, no. Exceptions can be made with approval of a counselor and a parent, and then only as part of a counseling session.
Q: Can I bring my pet?
A: Unfortunately, Casa cannot handle pets.
Q: I'm out on the street with my baby-can I come stay at Casa?
A: Casa is committed to the safety of all youth, including babies. We want to help get you and your child off the street. Many times this will include helping to get a social worker involved to let you know of all the services that are available to you. Florence Crittendon may have temporary homes for short-term placement. There is also Saint Ann's and a new shelter in Tustin-Mary's Shelter. For young women 18 and over, Precious Life Shelter may be able to help you. Call us at Casa and we will help you.
Q: I'm gay – can I come stay at Casa?
A: We do not discriminate as to race, creed, color, or sexual orientation. Many gay kids have stayed at Casa in the last 21 years.
Q: I'm pregnant-can I come stay at Casa?
A: Pregnant youth are welcome at Casa. Many pregnant young women have stayed with us.
