The purpose of Casa Youth Shelter is to provide temporary shelter for runaways and youth in crisis, enabling them to come through the crisis with an increased personal strength and a sense of renewal while in a supportive environment, with family reunification as a primary goal.

About Our Founder, Ms. Myldred E. Jones

After an illustrious 17-year Navy career where she was one of the first WAVES, Myldred retired as a Lieutenant Commander. She chose to live in Los Alamitos, California. As a consultant to then California Governor Ronald Reagan, she conducted an 18-month study of youth problems in the state and in 1968 she founded the first adolescent hotline, which has since become a model throughout the U.S. and internationally as well.

Memories of Myldred

Myldred E. Jones, retired Navy Lt. Commander, Founder of Casa Youth Shelter and other youth-centered non-profit organizations, died June 19, 2006 of complications following a fall. A resident of Los Alamitos for 38 years and a woman of deep faith, Myldred’s military and humanitarian accomplishments were recognized by the likes of five U.S. Presidents, Generals Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkopf and Pope John XXIII. She dedicated her life to helping, volunteering and watching out for the needy.

Among the many other very special recognitions presented to Myldred on her 90th birthday were those received from the President George H.W. Bush, all four former living presidents and the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Also extending their special wishes and recognitions of an exemplary lifetime of service were those of numerous national and state political and social figures and included as well those from the military as represented by: Secretaries of Defense and the Navy, Generals Powell and Schwarzkopf and the presidents of both National and California TROA organizations (now MOAA, the Military Officers Association of America).
