Casa Youth Shelter has been state and nationally recognized and commended for its unique, warm, and caring home-like environment for providing services for troubled teens and their families. We believe the welcoming atmosphere of the shelter is also reflected in the lengths of employment of full time employees, which ranges from 4 to 22 years.
Graduate Student Trainee Counselor
Casa's Graduate Student Trainee Counselors provide counseling services for residents, out-clients and families in both individual and group settings; they also provide staff direction for assigned cases. Additionally, Graduate Student Trainee Counselors receive five hours of supervision each week (one hour of individual and two two-hour group-counseling sessions), and they actively participate in monthly staff training meetings conducted by the clinical director.
Position requirements:
- Must be enrolled in an approved Masters program and assigned by your school.
- Must be able to make a one-year commitment and be willing to work 15-20 hours per week in a General Systems environment.
- Must be willing to learn individual, family, and group counseling techniques and work with a very diverse clientele in an often challenging environment.
- Must be willing to be videotaped in counseling sessions as necessary.
Undergraduate Student Intern
Undergraduate Student Interns work alongside our Youth Supervisors to provide closely supervised hours of observation and interaction with Casa's residents in a structured environment. The Intern position is designed to facilitate an introduction to social services in a Group Home setting. Interns remain with the shelter for one semester, and once they have fulfilled their required course hours, a careful evaluation of their capabilities is completed and forwarded to their school. We accommodate 10-15 interns three times a year -- winter, spring and summer semesters -- and we hire the best each semester for paid positions within our agency.
Position requirements:
- Must be assigned through your school.
- Must be willing to make a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week.

Pediatric and Internal Medicine Residency Observation Program:
Over the past two years a program featuring observation and interaction with teenage shelter residents by Pediatric and Internal Medicine Residents was undertaken by contracting with the University of California's Medical School's Residency Program. Throughout the year these medical Residents rotate through the program, dedicating time on a weekly basis to observe the physical and mental states of teenagers at Casa, many of who have been either physically or sexually abused. The Residents provide direct answers to direct questions put to them by the youth, but they do not provide medical services. This program is mutually beneficial for it gives the youth access to young doctors who will give them straight answers to medical information they seek and, reciprocally, it provides the young doctors with their first encounters with non-hospitalized adolescents in stressful situations.
